Weekend Wrap - Week 4

Askew On Form in Season Debut

The 1st XI hosted Holmsedale, who winning the toss elected to bat first.

Stuart Eddicott and Connor Byrne opened the bowling, each grabbing an early wicket and the opposition were soon 18-2.

Jacob Marlow bowled a tidy 10 over spell, picking up a wicket and only conceding 32 runs.

It was the spinners who then took control with Grant Sheen, Beau Couldrey and Scott Gallagher picking up 2 wickets each and helping bowl Holmesdale out for 197.

The Hayes reply got off to a steady start but with wickets falling regularly at 98-6 a win looked out of reach.

However with Jamie Askew playing his first game of the season, still at the crease, would there be someone who could stay with him?

Connor Byrne (20) helped Jamie put on a 38 run partnership and with his fall, Stuart Eddicott entered the fray.

A quick 12 ball 27 in a 37 run partnership saw the score move onto 173-8 - Jacob Marlow chipped in with 6 but with his wicket falling 20 runs were still required.

With Jamie still at the crease, could he shepherd Andrew Eddicott through the remaining overs.

Jamie, having skippered West Wickham FC to the SAL 1st Division Title, hadn't wielded a bat in anger this season but all the old class and style shone through as he ensured he kept the majority of the bowling and with Andy chipping in with 3 runs from the 4 balls he faced, Hayes hit the wining runs of the last ball of the penultimate over.

3 games and 2 wins, with one game rained-off has seen Hayes get off to a strong start in a tough league.

The 2's travelled to Holmesdale and batted first in what became a run feast.

Batting first skipper Sam Davis and young Alfie Peck were soon tucking into the home bowling - Sam scoring 76 and Alfie 50.

Martin Pratt with 30 and Finlay Baker 29 moved the score along and the innings closed on 303-6.

Holmesdale however also enjoyed batting and were soon spraying the Hayes bowlers around the ground and soon the Hayes total looked small - and sure enough a century for a Holmesdale youngster saw the home team triumph in the penultimate over.

Over 600 runs scored but Hayes just missing out.

The 3rd XI hosted Cobham on The Meadow and batted first.

After a steady start things started to go awry at 41-2.

6 wickets fell for 10 runs - including 4 LBW's in one over. The innings had lost its momentum although Mo Rahman, with an undefeated 27, saw Hayes get over the 100 mark.

The visitors quickly knocked off the runs for a comprehensive 10 wicket victory.

The 4's travelled to HSBC and bowled first.

Kevin Coates and Tom Tyne opened the bowling and were soon amongst the wickets - Kevin taking 2 and Tom with 4. Graeme Morrison chipped in with 3 for 12 as HSBC were dismissed for 155.

The Hayes batting was soon in trouble but Mark Trevatt with 64 in 51 balls tried in vain to get close to the HSBC total, but with his dismissal only Rhianna Simmonds with 10 and Tom Tyne 16 got into double figures.

106 all out saw Hayes lose by 49 runs.

Sunday saw the Women once again hosted Brighton and a speedy return to Hayes for Kathryn Leng[/b, Ex Hayes & England star who guided Brighton to victory last week in the T20 series.

Hayes batted first and [b]Tansi Price hitting 62, Gemma Murray 22 and Jemima Ringham 21 scoring runs, Hayes finished on 161 all out.

Hayes for a couple of early wickets but this resulted in Kathryn Leng coming to the crease and her quick-fire, 52 not out in 58 balls proved to be the match winning moment.

At least we won't be facing Kathryn next week!

So a tough weekend for most sides but the highlight being Jamie Askew and the 1st XI achieving back-to-back wins
